A woman who had it all

A female physician was able to attain her prized medical career that with detours and odd parties but she did so in a roundabout route and as a tribute to an unswerving purpose. But as a high school student, she was never single minded. Being a physician or becoming a linguist was the dilemma that struck her back when she was still in her local high school. Hedging her bets, she took all the sciences along with languages French, English and Spanish. Even as she had excellent communication prowess, she still looked on to her Spanish teacher in making her final decision. Her mentor said that while she can be a multilingual physician, she cannot make medicine second feed.

She was greeted by nothing but science subjects as her A-level studies when she went to the local community college. She was still undeterred even when after two years the results were not as good as they ought to be. Her favorite subject matter, Chemistry, was the only thing she passed.

Her true intention was to enter medicine but the she opted to enter through Natural Sciences first and after she will shift to medicine on her second year. While she enjoyed this time, she failed to transfer for she did not do well enough. Her grades were B's instead of A's. For this reason, and for her growing love of chemistry, she therefore decided to complete the degree.

As she love chemistry even more, chemistry and food technology became her majors. She was in this field when she received her honors degree. Job hunting after graduation was so excruciating. She didn't have a job for one year since she left the university. There were just no jobs. She traveled the food industry to find a job. Discouragement enables her to ask why she got into this in the first place.

It was just one solitary person that offered her a job and he was a drug dealer who saw her expertise with industrial kettles so he offered her a tempting sum to work for him. But she shares that she did not get tempted one bit even when the offer was so huge but before she turned it down, she clarified to him that she was raised to never see money as everything. She kept sending applications to medical school while never letting go of her dreams to become a doctor. She got a teaching job with trepidation as she waited to hear anything from medical school.

A year later, deciding that she needed to earn money to attend medical school when and if she were accepted, she left the classroom and went to a commercial bank as a trainee manager the next year. She would remain a mere employee if she decides to stay with the bank ? this was the consensus as she spoke to different people for advice and also weighed out the pros and cons on her own. Doing her passion while having a business was something medicine offered.

She finally joined medical school after two years. Year one traditionally is a mix of fun and learning. She threw herself into it. She was able to party hard and was never a book worm but managed to keep her grades up. She was among the top 10 students in Physiology and she also grabbed awards left and right in community health during her first year. Community medicine fascinated her as it made her feel connected to the people. You gain access to the bigger picture of your patients' lives as you enter into their homes. She found such program truly admirable.

When the discussion about cutting up cadavers came, she said that she might get very squeamish but she won't be affected emotionally. However, pathology was a different story. Her ten weeks were spent weeping after they had to autopsy dead bodies. The deaths led to her feeling some emotional loss. Thanks to her background in chemistry, she appreciated pharmacology. How chemicals worked in the body especially in curing diseases was something that mesmerized her. She'd troop to the library to read journals and this was not something she usually did. With her award in Pharmacology, everyone got surprised.

No longer trying to become a bookworm, she and her five study partners have gained the status of total party organizers. They all did well in their finals, in fact, three of them got honours. A member that belongs to her group brought home tons of medals including one which was an award in gynecology. Our time was never wasted after all.
