African Culinary - A Concise Writeup On South African Culinary And Its Origin

South Africa has a large array of food. South African culture is diverse and rich and this shows in their extensive array of foods. The soil by itself is perfect for crops and the awesome conditions and sunshine makes them thrive.

South Africa is sometimes known as the "Rainbow Nation", a phrase stated by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and soon popularized by then President Nelson Mandela, that encapsulates the diversity of the country's people and cultures. This diversity is again mirrored on South African culinary, that features cooking practised by indigenous people including the Khoisan, Sotho and Xhosa speaking people, settler cookery introduced by Afrikaner people and British origin, the culinary of the Cape Malay people (people who came from Malaysia and Indonesia. There is also the cuisine of people of Indian descent (influenced by Indian cuisine). Furthermore, South African cuisine has pulled cooking elements from that of neighboring nations, and this is clearly seen in a few delicacies that contain hints of Portuguese cuisine - Mozambique & Angola both were former Portuguese colonies.

Some famous South African dishes include:

- Biltong - Salty, dried meat (beef, chicken or even ostrich), related to jerky.

- Bobotie - Bobotie is a dish that originated from Cape Malay that resembles meatloaf with raisins, and laced with baked egg on top. The dish is offered with a variety of side dishes such as yellow rice, sambals, coconut, banana slices and chutney.

- Frikkadel - Meatballs with bread, eggs, spices & onions.

- Mealie bread - A sweetened bread baked with sweetcorn.

- Potjiekos - A stew with vegetables, meat, potato or rice, with wine or water added. Pasta & fruits are sometimes added.

- Sosatie - A Cape Malay dish consisting of mutton marinated with chillies, onions, curry leaves, garlic and tamarind sauce, placed on skewers and then fried or grilled.

- Tomato bredie (Afrikaans: Tamatiebredie) - Mutton stew, seasoned with cardamom, chillies, cinnamon, cloves and ginger.

- Waterblommetjiebredie - Meat stewed using Cape Pondweed flowers.

- Vetkoek - Dough, filled with minced or ground meat, mixed with syrup and honey, and then deep-fried.

- Malva Pudding - An apricot-flavored sponge-like sweet.

- Melktert - Melktert is Afrikaans for "milk tart". This dessert consists of a pastry crust containing a creamy filling made from milk, flour, eggs and sugar. Cinnamon is sometimes spread on the surface.
