Appointments for a Second Screening

By: Lewis Anthony

There was a lot of commotion at a clinic for speech and hearing last Monday. Problems with speech and hearing in children were evaluated by speech clinicians and hearing technicians as they examined twenty five of them. In their particular areas 537 preschool children were also evaluated by a junior league volunteer technician and a staff speech pathologist. Recommendations were given to 61 children for hearing and 86 for speech reexaminations.

Conducting assessments in the private preschools generated findings which allowed the children to know if they had normal hearing and speech abilities or if they should consider getting reexamined. When a person is still young, this is when the director of the hearing and speech clinic believes that detection of hearing and speech problems need to be done in order to prevent the cases from worsening into handicaps. As early as now they are already looking for signs of possible conditions that may affect the child later on in life, and this is why they conduct these checks, to see if there are probable conditions that could be alleviated to prevent the problem from worsening in time.

While they are still very young, the children can start with the treatments they need considering the number of severe problems discovered in the conducted examinations. As reported by one of the volunteers, some of the parents were unnecessarily concerned about how well their child's hearing and speech abilities are. Fulfillment is gained through their ability to provide parents with the fact that they have nothing to be anxious about.

With the volunteer program, things got started after one volunteer taught another volunteer about the techniques used to screen hearing. Soon after, kindergarten and nursery schools were contacted by these two ladies and they arranged for screenings to be conducted in every one. Hearing tests were provided to every single student and there were some who were further examined for their speech and language skills. Those who did not pass the tests or who were absent that day were invited through correspondence with the parents to attend the clinic at a certain location for a re screening.

In each case when the child did not respond to sound stimuli presented, or did not use the speech sounds, sentence structures or speech vocabulary expected of his age level, the patient is advised as to a recommended course of action. From home management suggestions there were also some cases which called for referrals to be made. Other than go for more tests some were even advised to consider getting treatment.

Speech and hearing problems in children can be assessed by the local speech and hearing clinic by providing a comprehensive examination that will take two to three hours. After the examinations have been conducted, the options available for any treatment can range from a home program, a weekly session that is one on one or grouped, and if necessary a daily intensive preschool program.

At this point in their lives, children at the preschool level are not exposed to anything that would harm their development regardless of what happens at this point because these are not only preventive but therapeutic in nature. From the preschool classes there were six that need to be screened and a date for the rescreening will also be arranged so that the parents can start making calls for appointments.
