Below Standard Preschool Speech and Language Skills

A local clinic for speech and hearing was full of activity on Monday morning. In order to detect speech and hearing impairments in children, a speech clinician or a hearing technician examined twenty five of them. Part of this program included screenings done by a junior league volunteer technician and a staff speech pathologist for 537 preschool children. Second examinations were suggested for 61 children for hearing and 86 of them for speech.

Considering the various private preschool screenings done, the information gathered showed if a child already had normal hearing or speech capabilities or needed to come for a reevaluation. According to the head of the local speech and hearing facility, they want to determine possible problems with hearing and speech early on before these worsen and develop into life altering handicaps. As early as now they are already looking for signs of possible conditions that may affect the child later on in life, and this is why they conduct these checks, to see if there are probable conditions that could be alleviated to prevent the problem from worsening in time.

Because of the program, they were able to detect problems that can now be provided with the necessary treatment before the children grow older. For a volunteer worker, some of the parents were extremely concerned about how their child's hearing and speech assessment would turn out. With this kind of project the joy of the volunteers come in telling parents that their child is as normal as they come.

Resulting from one volunteer training a fellow volunteer in the techniques used for hearing assessments is this volunteer program. Much effort was placed by these two ladies in calling up every nursery and kindergarten school in their area to set up screening schedules. Every child was examined for their hearing and some whom the teachers had concern were also given tests on speech and language usage. Offered to the parents of those children who were absent or were not able to pass the screenings were new schedules for retests to be conducted in a clinic located at a certain area.

When a child has yet to achieve the speech and hearing abilities for his age level then there might be a problem and so the screening analyzed everything from the reaction to sound stimuli, speech sound usage, vocabulary, and sentence construction to see what action should be considered. Home management was the recommendation for some of the children but there were several who needed referrals. Aside from having to get more assessments it was also suggested to some to obtain treatment.

For the children who may have some speech and hearing problems, the local speech and hearing clinic provides a comprehensive assessment that runs from two to three hours. Following the evaluation the recommended treatment program ranges from a home program, an individual or group session weekly to possible enrollment in a daily intensive preschool program.

Whatever the plan, it is sure to benefit most when a child is in his preschool years because it will be both preventive and therapeutic in nature said the staff members. Screenings are yet to be given to six preschool classes and there will also be a second rescreening that will be arranged wherein the parents who were notified can call in to arrange appointments.
