Companies Tanzania – 4 Airline Companies Headquartered in Tanzania

By: Jason Steller

There are a number of airline companies that operate in and out of Tanzania. There are five main airlines that are headquartered in Tanzania. These airlines are Air Tanzania, Coastal Aviation, Precision Air, and ZanAir.

Air Tanzania began as part of East African Airways. In 1977, East African Airways was broken up and Air Tanzania was one of the airlines formed. The airline was owned by the Tanzanian government until the privitization of the company began in 2002. The Air Tanzania airline company has since declined to the point of even temporarily ceasing operations at times. Currently it mostly operates as a domestic Tanzania flight operator, but they do have some codeshare flights with regional airlines, such as Air Uganda and Air Zimbabwe. Air Tanzania is also part of the Oneworld frequent flyer program, which makes it the only Tanzania based airline part of any sort of major frequent flyer program. The hub for Air Tanzania is Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport.

Coastal Aviation is known as Tanzania’s flying safari company. They have been in operation since 1988. They were the first to offer flying safaris that were regularly scheduled. This made it affordable for more people to enjoy a flying safari, which was previously expensive due to having to be chartered. The Coastal Aviation company serves a variety of airports throughout Tanzania and also sometimes international destinations, such as Kigali in Rwanda. Coastal Aviation uses the Dar es Salaam airport as its hub.

Precision Air is considered to be the best among airline companies headquartered in Tanzania. They offer domestic flights in Tanzania between several cities including Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Arusha. They even fly to the Kilimanjaro International Airport, which is the closest place to fly in to for those heading to Tanzania to summit Mount Kilimanjaor. They also serve domestic destinations such as Mombasa and Nairobi in Kenya and Entebbe in Uganda. As of 2010, Precision Air is the only Tanzanian airline company to pass the IATA Operational Safety Audit, which is part of why it is the best airline in Tanzania. Precision Air uses the Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro airports as their hubs.

ZanAir is another Tanzania airline company that offers some domestic flight options to get between major cities in Tanzania, such as Arusha, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar. This airline uses the Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam airports as its hubs. It does not have any international flights.
