Delrin Machining By Emco Plastics

By: Emco Plastics

Plastic is among the most versatile materials for producing numerous everyday items. From widely used household items to office storage accessories to industrial bottles and packaging materials, plastic has wide usage across industries, businesses, and households and it has become an indispensable part of our daily lives.

There are many kinds of industrial plastics with countless general and special purposes. Plastic is amongst the most amazing innovations throughout the last millennium. The name plastic itself comes right out of the Greek word 'Plastikos' which denotes the capability to taking any shape or mold. The properties of industrial plastics aren't the same as one another. Therefore, plastic comes with a wide flexible range to meet a range of manufacturers' requirements.

Delrin machining sheets, rods & tubes have lots of the same characteristics of industrial metals like brass, aluminum, zinc, and stainless-steel. Delrin is a homopolymer acetal (POM). Delrin is amongst the strongest non-reinforced plastics available. Delrin machining bridges the gap between metals and ordinary plastics using a unique blend of creep resistance, strength, stiffness, hardness, dimensional stability, toughness, fatigue resistance, solvent and fuel resistance, abrasion resistance, low wear and low friction. Delrin 150 Natural, standard general purpose, unfilled acetal provides the best impact toughness of all the unfilled Delrin products. Delrin 150 SA was discontinued in 2003 & replaced by Delrin 150. Lubricated and glass filled grades are available to enhance Delrin resin's already excellent mechanical and thermal properties.

Acetal, commonly known as the name brand Delrin, is a thermoplastic polymer manufactured through the polymerization of formaldehyde. The chemical composition, regular structure and high crystallinity of acetal resins give parts composed of acetal a mix of physical properties not available with metals or other plastics.

Delrin Acetal (the generic name for a family of products) provides high strength and stiffness together with increased dimensional stability and ease of machining. Low moisture absorption, low coefficient of friction in addition to good wear properties make Delrin machining resin ideally suited for close tolerance mechanical parts.

Delrin machining resin is often utilized for gears, rollers, electrical components, ROV components, bearings and bushings. Also, it is used in RC Car wheels, paintball gun bolts, and plenty of other applications. Delrin machining is a much better replacement for Nylon. Delrin machining is used in guitar picks for its durability, and combination wheels in top notch safes because of its resistance to x-rays. Delrin machining is utilized to create frame sliders for motorcycles and knee pucks for motorcycle riders. It's used in knife handles. Delrin is easy to saw, drill, lathe and also sand. It is also authorized by the FDA for food-based applications.

Homopolymer acetal is most commonly known as Delrin machining, resins which are currently made by the DuPont Company under the trade name Delrin AF. Homopolymers have slightly higher mechanical and thermal properties than Copolymers. Delrin machining is available in various grades, colors, and stock shapes, with various fillers for enhanced properties.
