Developing Your Personal Art Style - Important Matters to Discuss

By: Mike Davis

Cultivating a personal art style has been a struggle for a lot of artists since it involves a lot of technicalities. What if it would suck? Would anybody appreciate it? These are just two of the hundreds of questions artists ask when pondering about developing their own style that can set them apart and make themselves unique.

Personal Style – Is It Really Important

Having personal art styles has been a common debatable issue as this sparks different point of views and opinions. Some artists believe that having unique and personally made art styles are not essential as long as you are comfortable with the current style you are using. Other artists, on the other hand, believe that having your own art style symbolizes your growth as an artist and it also means that you are a step closer at being well known once your personal style gets acknowledged.

Unique Art Styles Represent Who You Are as an Artist

One of the strongest points that come across the issue on having unique art styles is that having one is a way of representing yourself as an artist. This means a unique art style functions as a trademark of an artist. Other artists will be able to appreciate your personal style and they might also try to use it for themselves if they think that the style you have developed represents them as well.

Using an Art Style that is Not Yours but That Represents Who You Are

On this perspective, some artists utilize existing styles because it expresses who they are as an artist and it also aids them in mastering pre-existing styles that they can later customize and treat as their own in the future. Most budding artists make use and master existing styles until they later realize that they need to make some customizations so that it can help them express themselves better. Using an art style that is not originally yours but represents who you are can potentially lead to the creation of your very own art style.

Most Unique Art Styles Come from Influences of Existing Styles

Although artists are not united when it comes to the importance of personal art styles, it is a fact that majority of unique art styles available come from the influence of existing art styles. As artists grow and become a lot more skilled, they use existing art styles and then later customize it and treat it as their own as this aids them in expressing who they are as an artist.

It actually depends on the artist's standpoint whether he or she is in need of a personal art style. Nevertheless, what is truly significant is that artists continue to express themselves freely despite the use of different art styles or whether the art styles used are theirs or not.
