Difficulties with an Impaired Sense of Hearing

By: Laura Tomlinson

Countless variations of new hearing devices meant to serve the needs of the hearing impaired were displayed. For the subject of hearing impairment, four assemblies were arranged and this was fourth out of the four. You name it and they probably had it as there were various devices that ranged from inexpensive units that used home outlets for power and could easily be installed, sound activated light alert systems that were powered by the sound of doorbells or telephones, and of course the highly expensive TDD or Telecommunication Device for the Deaf which needed special installation.

A telephone and keyboard function with the TDD to let the deaf send and receive written messages. Basic functioning for this device is TDD to TDD, and considering the limitations the device had, emergency service providers have started to install units in different facilities so that TDD users can easily contact them for any emergency aid.

Deafness pertains to a complete absence of hearing ability, most people who are deaf have been so since birth. Sound recognition is still possible for those who are hearing impaired although the sounds are not as strong. A majority of the devices presented served the hearing impaired, a select few like the telephone and doorbell machines can actually be useful for the deaf.

Motorists can benefit from one of the new devices as it releases signals when you reach the proximity of emergency vehicles. More facilities are beginning to equip their emergency vehicles with transmitters able to recognize signals 1800 feet away. After placing a receiver in the car, a light on the dashboard would automatically start flashing as the alert for nearby emergency vehicles. Everybody can use this in their vehicles, people who hear well may not notice sirens when the stereo is loud or the air conditioner is on.

One marketing strategy to raise sales for private vehicle receivers was for the manufacturer to give these transmitters to emergency vehicles free of charge. More people are being influenced try these out as every receiver that is sold results to a $4 rebate. More and more people have started using these, an offer was given by a car maker as he vowed to put a receiver on each car he makes, but this is under one condition where a certain number of emergency vehicles needed to have transmitters as well. Part of the offer stated that he would be given exclusive installation rights for the transmitters.

There was something worn on the wrist, it resembled a watch but was really a pager. Any activity from the base stations that could be a phone, doorbell, or call box, signals the pager to vibrate when the wearer is needed. Every pager has four indicators so that the wearer knows who the caller is.

To improve the quality of sounds for the hearing impaired, there were devices such as a set of headphones with a little box serving as the volume control. Simple and inexpensive, another device made watching TV better for the hearing impaired as they can easily raise the volume in their headsets without causing the main TV volume feed to become unbearably loud for those who can hear.

For one bookstore proprietor, his interest in hearing impediments came as a result of being influenced by his clients to learn more about the subject, these clients of his possessed different hearing impediments themselves. The man makes an effort to get his hands on various devices that cater to the needs of these people, he then introduces them to such products. With a large wired up board, he shows them how these products function. Devices can only be bought from the manufacturers themselves, the man will provide all the necessary information.

A good sense of hearing may cloud one's judgment for the hearing impaired. It is not easy to get up and not be able to listen to the news, nor is it easy to not know if your car is running smoothly, you may not even hear the alarm to wake you up.
