Difficulty with Your Ears?

By: Dorothy Schulman

A lot of people don't know much about ears. Think about this brief hearing quiz. Charles participates in both shooting and scuba diving. Should he be wearing sonic air valves? That is the technical term for ear plugs. When Janet listens to music, the speakers are turned up to maximum volume. Is her mother correct in telling her that her hearing will be damaged if she does not turn it down? If Tom's ear wax builds up more than normal, is he helping his hearing by removing the wax often? Yes you should wear ear plugs whenever you are diving or will be around loud noises, and sorry Mom, loud music won't damage your hearing, but improperly clearing wax from your ears can!

Whereas teenagers experience awkward growth phases with their vocal chords, they do not experience a similar problem with their ears. But a very real hearing hazard is when pressure to the ear is increased beyond normal. Correct pressure breathing techniques are essential for anyone who does any diving. If you are too close by, a gun or jet motor gust can hurt you. Unfortunately for parents that are sick of that "noise" coming from their kids' bedrooms, loud screaming metal music does not pose the danger to hearing loss that many people once thought it did - even at full volume!

Physicians have established that a majority of the wax that collects within your ears cannot harm you. Because of this, all cleaning and washing of the ears needs to happen externally, not internally. Anyone that uses a match stick or bobby pin to clean the inner portion of their ear risks causing an ear infection or rupturing the ear drum.

If you feel you have an issue with the wax in your ear, you should always go to a doctor or nurse who is trained to take care of your ears. Never stick anything pointed, such as toothpicks or other devices inside the ear where it can do damage.

In order to resolve educational and personality difficulties, an increasing number of schools evaluate the hearing of their students. If you happen to rank low on that sort of test, don't take your first score as being the ultimate score. Low scores can be attributed to illnesses or a problem with attention span, too. You may be distracted or uninterested in what is being said. In case it is a problem with attitude, additional testing should be done. It may be that your ears are just fine.

If you suspect that you have an ear infection, consult your doctor before you go swimming. When treating an ear infection, the ear canal is often dried out so you should avoid getting it wet. Earaches should always be cause for concern and should be mentioned to your doctor.

The common cold can also cause some problems with your hearing for a short period of time. Try to remain calm about this, but if it continues consult with your doctor. It is possible that the middle ear accumulated fluid; if so, the doctor will need to remove it to prevent permanent loss of hearing.

Loss of hearing is more common than most people realize, approximately 10% of Americans are experiencing some type of hearing problem, but with treatment, most will not have their lives affected too greatly. Because of that small, delicate little instrument in your inner ear, you are able to listen to the sounds of a magnificent symphony and the cry of a newborn child - so appreciate your hearing! If you like to engage in any activities that you feel might put your hearing at risk, ask your doctor for ways to protect your ears. These people can provide tips that athletes can use, as well as ways that teens can cope with colds and hearing loss. In addition, they will be able to tell you how you can live your life with hearing loss and assist other people who have hearing problems.
