Do Your Ears Work As Expected?

By: Tabithaye Christensen

A lot of people don't know much about ears. Give this brief hearing quiz a shot: Chuck enjoys shooting and scuba diving, so is he smart for wearing sonic ear valves? Sonic air valves is a fancy term for ear plugs if you didn't know. What if you like to listen to your stereo or MP3 player on full blast? Can this practice do damage to someone's hearing? If you have an excess of ear wax which you fear will cause plugging, should you take care to clean yout teeth regularly? The answers might surprise you. The first question is "yes"; but the other two are "no".

Today's experts believe that the structures of the ear do not lag behind in terms of growth in the human body the way the voice does. But a very real hearing hazard is when pressure to the ear is increased beyond normal. Before you go scuba diving you should take a course that teaches you the basics of pressure breathing. If you stand too close to a gun or a jet motor, you run the risk of injury. But no matter how much you might dislike their music, rock and roll played on a player at full volume is no more likely to damage your teens ears than would classical music played at the same volume.

And contrary to what most people think, ear wax serves a purpose and in normal quantities it is harmless to the ear. That is why you should clean and was your ears on the outside instead of internally. Digging around inside of your ear with a foreign object can cause an infection or tear a hole in your ear drum.

If you think you have too much waxy build up you should see a doctor or trained ear care technician to see if it needs to be professionally removed. They will tell you not to stick any kind of pointed object, like a toothpick, inside the ear.

Today most schools will furnish a hearing test to their students to help with study and socialization problems. However, if you have received a low score on a hearing test be sure to take another and get a second opinion. A low score may be a temporary result of a cold, not feeling well or simply just not paying attention during the testing procedure given at school. This means that your attitude could be causing the issue, so you should take more than one test.

Ask your doctor if you should still go swimming if you have an ear infection. Some infections can only be cleared once the ear canal is dry, so swimming would be counter-productive. Ear aches should not be taken lightly, and you need to talk to your doctor.

A slight hearing loss after a cold is not at all uncommon. Refrain from getting flustered the first time this occurs, but if it continues, get checked out by a physician. It is possible that the middle ear accumulated fluid; if so, the doctor will need to remove it to prevent permanent loss of hearing.

If you do experience permanent hearing loss, you are joining the ranks of one in every ten Americans who continue to lead normal and productive lives. The fragile assembly of our ears allows us to hear our children crying, beautiful music, and the wind in the trees, and should be cherished by everyone. If you have any questions regarding the protection of your hearing, please consult your doctor. A qualified professional will have good advice for sportsmen and safety measures to offer to teenagers with head colds. In addition, they will be able to tell you how you can live your life with hearing loss and assist other people who have hearing problems.
