Does Management Training Destroy Creativity?

I’ve spent most of this week at a management and verbal exchange training course. It’s the kind of thing designed to give researchers more broadly applicable talents for once we undertaking clear of the ivory towers and out into the actual world.

Typically, I’m quite cynical approximately those sorts of issues; crew building and management workouts regarding flip charts, put up-it notes and brainstorming sessions (or whatever they call them now, concept showers or mind orgies or one thing like that). My inflammation threshold could be very low.

So sadly it got here as little marvel that the course was about as much amusing as being drive-fed blocks of Lego. Even as achey breaky center plays on a relentless loop within the background. In a room that’s fairly uncomfortably too warm.

I may move into some detail about the educating methods used, and why I feel they were so basically improper, but I wish to pick out up on a selected point.

Essentially, this course offered techniques and standards. An excessively small number of things other people have mentioned can be utilized as techniques of doing stuff. I can accept that this turns out to be useful, and that there are good ways and unhealthy how one can go about it. The issue, I believe, with all of those “pondering models” and “management tools”, is the need to classify, proceeduralise (I made that one up) and standardise everything. The restrictions restrict creativity, in all fields.

It will now not promote consultancy books, or earn me a wheelbarrow stuffed with cash teaching a training course, however from time to time, simply letting sensible other folks get on with it is enough. The real management trick, is to offer the best setting for them to do so.

I guess it all depends on the type of industry, the type of employees and of course, the type of leader you desire to be! Make your own choices to get the balance between creativity and good organisation right, and you'll hit a winning ball, but get it wrong and you may find that productivity is sliding down a very steep hill, and is now out of control.
