Drinking to prevent hearing problems

By: Catherine Salcedo

A pill that minimizes hearing damage due to extreme noise is something many scientists have been trying to determine using lab animals for several years now. Now they're sending in the Marines. Drinking a wild berry flavored herbal tea concoction with ear plugs on be what the 600 Marines in Camp Pendleton will get into as they start rifle training in a couple of months.

Along with their meals, they shall take this drink during the two week period of the notoriously loud training, which is really held responsible for 10 percent hearing loss among the participants. As soon as everything finishes accordingly, health tests must be done in order to see whether the substance in the concoction made a difference of not. The newest development in finding something to protect or even cure hearing loss from noise exposure is certainly this one. This effort picked up steam in just the past years while it is not new at all, shares most experts.

Hearing loss caused by noise is among the most common occupational maladies and the second in rank for the most self reported occupational injury or illness, reveals the federal government. The number of individuals in America who either enter prolonged exposure to noisy surroundings or get affected by a sudden explosion has now risen to 10 million and all of them suffer from irreparable hearing loss. Approximately 30 million people are thought to be exposed to hazardous degrees of working noise like the sectors of mining, construction, agriculture and manufacturing.

Care must be considered even by the professional musicians. When the trumpet began to wail behind a man who was part of a big band performance, he had to cover his ears with his bare hands as he ducked realizing that he had forgotten to wear any ear protection. There is also danger in hobbies like recreational shooting, snowmobiling and motorcycling.

Earplugs and specialized sound deadening earmuffs are clearly helpful, but they're not always enough. There are varieties of sound which overwhelm these devices. Most would not bother to wear these even if they should, and others on the other hand are just susceptible to damage in their hearing capability. Plus, damage can be done with the levels of sound going to the skull and passing through the ears even when it is protected.

That is since brute force by loud noise may not be the only thing that damages the delicate inner ear all the time. But we see that in most cases, the inner ear is provoked by it and thus we see it producing a lot of free radicals which are oxygen molecules proven to be very bad to the health. Antioxidants work by neutralizing free radicals and the ear can naturally defend itself. But with enough noise settling in, the ear's antioxidants get overwhelmed so much.

The situation shows that the free radicals cause damage that lead to the death of the sound receptors found in the ear. It indeed makes sense to fortify the natural defense of the ear through its antioxidant defenses as a preventive measure, then use it to correct immediately anything wrong that may take place after the exposure to noise. Animal experiments in prevention look promising, and people are getting very excited about applying this to protection against noise exposure in humans.

One of the most renowned pioneers when it come to the realm of hearing antioxidants share that he saw in many people its effects. This man already had a patent for his nutritional supplement, the one that he prescribes to the many patients who come to him for a cure on their hearing loss struggles due to aging, noise or perhaps both causes. A lot of the patients rejoiced with the improvement in their hearing along with a very slow progression of the hearing loss they experience. People who suffer from moderate to severe levels of hearing loss, this was not enough to make them forget about their hearing aids, but it has pushed them to somehow remove it or shift to a less powerful and smaller mode.

The one person immensely involved in the Marine experiment as well as his other colleagues were able to obtain good feedback from their tests on antioxidant compounds used on animals. He is keen on developing N acetylcysteine or NAC which is approved by most federal authorities to address an overdose situation of a popular painkiller brand. NAC boosts the ear's own antioxidant defense by neutralizing the free radicals. In his animal work, NAC has reduced hearing loss when given before or right after exposure to loud noise. The effect generally means the difference on whether or not you need a hearing aid, when translated for humans.
