Exactly Who Was Helen Beatrix Potter?

By: Matt Droves

Beatrix Potter whose actual first name was in fact Helen, was a great British author and illustrator who was most commonly known regarding her kid's publications featuring anthropomorphic characters like in the children's classic -- The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

Beatrix was in fact born into a privileged family where she was educated by private teachers and thus grew up isolated from other kids. She had quite a few domestic pets and also spent vacations in Scotland and the Lake District where she developed a fondness of the scenery, plants and creatures, all of which she carefully viewed and painted. Beatrix's parents didn't ecourage her intellectual growth as a young woman, but her analysis as well as watercolors of fungus resulted in her becoming broadly respected within the field of mycology.

In her 30's, Beatrix Potter released the very successful children's book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Around that time she became secretly engaged to her publisher Norman Warne. This induced a breach with her father and mother, whom disapproved of her marrying someone of lower social standing. Unfortunately though, Warne died before the marriage ceremony.

Eventually Beatrix Potter began writing and also illustrating children's books full time. With the earnings from her publications, Beatrix grew to become financially independent of her mother and father and was finally n a position to acquire Hill Top Farm in the Lake District. She extended the property with additional acquisitions over time. In her 40's, Beatrix wedded William Heelis, a nearby solicitor. She wound up becoming a sheep breeder and also farmer while continuing to publish as well as illustrate children's novels. In total she published twenty-three publications.

Beatrix passed away on December 22nd, 1943, and donated almost all of her possessions to the National Trust. Her books continue to sell well around the world, in a mixture of languages. Her stories have been retold in several formats including a ballet, motion pictures, along with animation.

Such is her reputation, and also that of the characters from her publications, that numerous Beatrix Potter Figurines were created. These Beatrix Potter figurines which include virtually all the characters in her publications are actually really collectable and valuable.
