Exercise Daily, Stay In Shape!

By: Joyce Mack

Before having children I had a job as a physical education teacher which I thoroughly enjoyed. I was always slim, healthy and had plenty of energy. Once the children grew up my life became somewhat boring, I just had to do something a little different.

Going back to my previous job appealed, however, it would take up too much of my time, not leaving me with any time for myself. Working from home sounded good, so I had a look on the internet. This would allow me to keep the house spick and span, but what type of job? There were a number of jobs available, writing articles, addressing envelopes and tele-sales, but none were suitable to me.

I started to read about exercise sessions on the internet and found an advert about how to become a personal trainer. I must admit I thought I was past that, having put on a lot of weight after having the children. Different diets came and went but none were successful. In fact I had become a bit of a couch potato, wasn’t doing anything energetic and knew things would have to change.

I decided to become a personal trainer and began going to my local gym. Also played tennis again, a sport I had always loved. The pounds soon began to disappear and I felt really good once more. I did read that it didn’t really matter what size you are, anyone can become a personal trainer. You just have to be a good role model for your clients.

Again the internet was ideal to obtain information about how to become a personal trainer. Patience, persistence and organisation skills are a good starter, as well as being completely motivated and a good listener. These personal assets I felt I could more than manage.

I enrolled on a workshop course to take examinations leading to certification. I absolutely loved it and was delighted to find, when the course was over, that I had passed with flying colours. It gave me a new lease of life and a great feeling of accomplishment. Now I had to find somewhere to put my expertise and learning into practice.

Admittedly, I always fancied setting up my own business. I did plenty of research online, how to register a company, a business name, obtaining the right insurance, also finding appropriate premises. I didn’t have to wait too long and found a great location. I stuck to my marketing strategy, sent out flyers, newsletters as well as business cards.

My friends helped me out at first, by coming to my classes. They loved exercising under my instructions so much, most are still with me. Soon I had quite a few clients who preferred to have one-to-one personal training sessions. It is good to encourage others and see the results they achieve after exercising; I can only recommend others to do the same as I did. Don’t give up, just do it, you will feel the benefits!
