Growth for Tiny Christian churches

By: Jason Evans

What is it about small churches that seems to make them almost opposed to church growth? In numerous cases these small churches are small cause they wish to be. This can not be such a bad thing though.

In a small church you have a better chance of discipleship that you would not have in a larger church. Since of that one certainty alone numerous small churches do not wish to grow. The real reason some do not need to though comes from something else.

Small church growth would mean a loss of the close fellowship enjoyed in most smaller christian churches. This is true just in part though. Smaller churches that develop into larger ones need not loose out on their fellowship.

One way that larger churches have kept a sturdy friendship in place is through the use of small groups. These are like mini churches within the larger one. It gives people a chance to get involved in each others lives when you visit them in their home for bible studies.

If a church wishes to grow there are also other options. When you think of church growth you would normally think of gaining large numbers of people into one building. This is not the real case though since the church is a fluid hypothesis. It is not contained in any one place.

A small church can send out missionaries to start other churches. This will develop the real church while keeping the local church somewhat small enough to have a sturdy discipleship. The church could have members nationwide.

Whatever the case for a lack of small church growth one thing is clear. Without an active outreach a church will eventually close its doors. This is because older members die off and younger ones move away. You want a steady stream of people even if it is merely a trickle.

Smaller christian churches can use straightforward outreach ideas such as door to door surveys and other almost free things. There is a great host of things these churches can do. The problem is getting them to do it. While some say they need to do evangelism a great many do not.

So how do you get your small christian church to at least keep its doors open with people like that? The truth is you could not. What you may do though is encourage every visitor to become a member and slowly change the makeup of the church.

These new visitors will bring their own ideas and over time you may see a change in the views of your church toward evangelism and growth. Cause a healthy church is one that is ever evolving you should be happy to know that this is a sign of health.

Christian church growth will not happen over night. Like already mentioned you should determine if growth is something your church in truth wants. It is always a decent hypothesis not to fight a crowd of people.

Your small church growth does not have to stop with only numbers in your building though. You could even mull over using technology such as television to bring the church to the shut in. This will also grow your church without adding numbers into a building.
