How to overcome hearing impairment and all its causes

By: Doman Kittan

A wife complains that her spouse never seems to listen to what she is talking about and prefers his newspaper more, and this is a fairly common complaint among the missus. But the benefit of the doubt must be awarded to dad. Maybe he really didn't hear that call to help set the table or take out the trash or let in the dog. And a survey that has been accomplished a couple decades ago is showing that 14.5 million Americans suffer from loss of hearing which really deters their ability to understand conversations and to function well both in their work and society. America's Department of Health Education and Welfare states that people from ages 17 to 44 have hearing destruction making this situation top the list of chronic health problems in the U.S., and they also revealed that women suffered from it less than the men. Back then, trumpets for the ears were used but today, we see excellent solutions in today's hearing aids which are very much like transistors.

Isn't it a pity how, according to a recent survey, over three fourths of Americans would avail of ear aids for hearing without prior diagnosis of a person who is an expert in the ear and its diseases or an otologist or perhaps an audiologist who is adept with the hearing dynamics or both of these experts, which should be the case? Let us look at this New York newspaper's staff who revealed his case.

He shares that he was just a middle aged man so he could not accept why his hearing was getting progressively inferior so he bought hearing aids straight from a retail man. His hearing worsened in the next few years. He found out too late after developing pain and discharge from his ear, that he had an inoperable cancer when he finally sought professional help. Patients are given the right kind of hearing aid according to the degree of hearing loss, they are also briefed on its use and then asked to come back again in two months for a follow up session and these are done only at otology clinics.

If the patient is unsatisfied with the hearing aid, he can ask it to be replaced. Military men both who are retired and those still on active duties get their aids replaced without an extra cost. It depends on the rank of the sponsoring individual, on how much discounts the dependents will get. Noise probably accounts for more hearing loss than all other factors combined.

The most significant sources of noise found in almost every home are the air conditioners hair dryers, garbage disposals, blenders and vacuum cleaners. Rock and roll sounds, the steady roar of traffic and snowmobile engines are also found to lead to hearing damage. Since serious hearing damage by noise cannot be reversed, prevention through noise control or wearing muffs to protect hearing is by far the best medicine. Loss of hearing is created by many other causes.

Diseases of the middle ear, along with drug exposure or viral infections are known to lead to loss of hearing. Some people are born with hearing loss as a result of certain genetic diseases, prenatal exposure to a viral infection such as rubella, a drug that damages hearing, a birth injury or inadequate oxygen at birth. Viral and bacterial infections, high doses of aspirin, certain antibiotics, types of diuretics used to treat high blood pressure, the deterioration of nerves and blood vessels through aging and occasionally by a tumor on the auditory nerve are known to lead to certain types of hearing damage.

Infections within the ear especially during its early stage, according to doctors, must be treated so that avoidable hearing loss can be barred. Other tips would include not flying with a cold, not to use instruments which also include cotton swabs in order to eliminate wax in the ear. Wax, if it interferes with hearing, should be left there and only the otologist should be allowed to deal with it. Adjustment of the drug dosage or entirely changing the drug can be done by the doctor if he finds that the drug actually affects the hearing of his patient. Most people, adults especially, are advised to have a hearing analysis within their regular physical examination schedules.

For those that are beyond 65, those who work in noisy environments, or even those who regularly take drugs that could damage hearing, such tests are valuable. It is a must that during the first two months of life on infants who weighed less than 3 and a half pounds at birth, endured viral infections in the prenatal period or have birth defects in the ear, nose or perhaps throat and lastly, if the family history reflects childhood hearing impairment.
