Improve your hearing with hearing aids

By: Rauslly Stark

A person doesn't put much thought about their sense of hearing believing it will stay with them until the end. Sadly, some people will lose their sense of hearing whether they want to or not. The important thing is to educate people on the causes of hearing loss then on how it can be treated.

When it comes to birth defects, hearing loss is not a stranger as every three babies have it out of every 1,000 babies. Just because a person is young and is below twenty's doesn't mean a thing when it comes to hearing loss. Other common causes of hearing loss are genetics, medicines and stress.

A common cause of loss of hearing comes in the form of very loud environmental noise surrounding a person. Airports, construction sites, concerts are all environments with very loud noises that can damage a person. Power tools are machinery that emit loud levels of noise and protective hearing equipment should be worn to avoid damage.

Hearing aids can be used to manage and treat various levels of hearing impairment. Determining what type of hearing aid may be a little complicated as there are many different types available. One common objective of hearing aids is to collect then magnify and amplify the surrounding sound to the user.

The easiest way to determine the type of the hearing aid is by examining where it is worn by the user. A device that is worn behind the ear is called BTE and is usually just made up of a case, tube and ear molds. Unlike other hearing aids, the using a BTE, you need not worry about moisture or earwax impacting the device as only the ear mold is worn inside the ear.

A different type of hearing aid that is making waves in the hearing impaired community is what is called a cochlear implant or a bionic ear. The cochlear implant needs to be surgically implanted in a person, behind the targeted ear and just underneath the scalp. The workings of this device is very complex as the device needs to pick up sounds, convert these into electronic impulses then sends these through electrodes into the brain.

A cochlear implant has some very complex parts as it has a microphone, speech processor, transmitter, receiver, stimulator and many tiny electrodes. Cochlear implants are sadly, still very expensive, as it is still a very new technology that has not scaled yet. To assure the patient a high chance of success, the history of hearing problems need to be checked, as well as the current hearing and health situation of the subject.

Scientist and medical professionals are waiting for a new form of hearing treatment called gene therapy. A person doesn't have to worry about bulky hearing aids anymore, as gene therapy may one day allow people to grow new body parts. While it may sound easy in writing, gene therapy is complex and is still being developed.

Prevention is the best medicine when it comes to hearing impairment but sometimes there is nothing a person can do but live with hearing treatments. A specialist trained in the various aspecs of hearing treatment is the only way to know which hearing treatment should be used. It is hard to imagine a life without hearing.
