Information Regarding The Region Of Lampun In Thailand

By: Jessie Stone

Lampun is near Chiang Mai and Lampang in Northern Thailand. Lampun is on the Ping river that is an early trading route for the flowers into Chiang Mai and further south into the country. Lampun is a picturesque area with vast flower laden sprawling valleys which are practically the foothills towards the Himalayas given that they share the same tectonic plate. Lampun is just 15 miles away from Chiang Mai.

During the late 1100's this part of the Mon kingdom fell to the Lannas until eventually it was ruled by the Burmese for two centuries. Thailand was then finally created by a cooperation of many provincial leaders and the Burmese were finally removed from Thailand altogether.

Festivals

The most known celebration to see in Lampun would be the Longan Fair in which floats adorned with flowers are utilized to commemorate the picking of the Longan fruit (which happens to be much like a lychee). Females take part in customary dances and males will place floral garlands all around their necks in appreciation of their dance.

Where to Visit

There are lots of temples in Lampun which are worth a visit. The most notable temple would be the Wat Phra That Hariphunchai which was built in the 15th century by The King of Chiang Mai. Lampun is renowned for its wood designs and carvings and ornaments showcasing the cultural festivities of the ancient Lanna Kingdom of Chiang Mai.

To go to Lampun coming from Bangkok you can ride on the overnight train to Chiang Mai after which take a coach. On the other hand you can go to Chiang Rai which is a lot closer but there are poor bus links to Lampun. Buses are usually local buses without air-conditioning and stop too often.

One more location to go to is the Ko Samui Flower and Butterfly garden that is located at Laem Natien and this is on the south-eastern coast of Ko Samui close to the Central Samui Village resort and also near to the Aquarium. This tropical park features huge amounts of butterflies as well as plant species which are indigenous to Thailand. There is also an observatory overlooking the coast, and the garden can organize trips to the local coral reefs in Ko Samui.

The butterflies and plants are placed within big and tall nets to hold the butterflies within, also providing shade which is necessary for many of the types of vegetation and to help keep the tourists away from the sun. Many photography enthusiasts go to these gardens, you can often find Japanese and Korean enthusiasts playing with their macro lenses – snapping up a little of nature's elegance to take home with them.
