Is Your Baby Having Auditory Difficulties?

By: Cynthia Greenblatt

Your ears need attention, and people who are deaf will benefit from the use of lip reading and a hearing aid. However, it's rather unfortunate that so many children are born normal hearing range and end up with a sickness or get into an accident that ruins this irreplaceable gift of hearing.

Scarlet fever or measles are infectious diseases that can cause hearing impairment. Other conditions, such as a sinus infection, diseased adenoids, tonsillitis, or even a severe and long-lasting cold, can cause inflammation or an abscess in the middle ear accompanied by intense pain. A child's hearing ability will be hurt lest a physician is involved and his orders are strictly followed.

Small items like a bean or wooden bead can easily find themselves in the ear canal, particularly in younger children. These foreign objects can typically be removed without difficulty if the parent is able to see it. However, if you cannot see it, or if it won't dislodge, never prod at it or be forceful. If you are ever unsure about ear problems, call your pediatricians office. Your child's ear may also be invaded by a small insect, but this situation is quite rare. Insert a couple of drops of lukewarm castor oil or other sugary oil into the ear.

Small objects like matches, bobby pins, or straight pins should never be used to remove ear wax. The risk of damaging the child's ear drum is too great if you do things this way. Instead, the wax should be gently removed by a parent, and from the outer ear only. If it is hard to remove, or if it is packed in and deeply entrenched, this is another situation that calls for a doctor.

Ear infections are occasionally the result of swimming in contaminated water. Some people with sensitive ears must protect their ears to prevent the eardrum from rupturing when they dive from high places. Underwater swimming and diving should seldom be done, or even stopped completely, if sinus or ear pain develops.

If the child has pain in their ear with an unusual secretion and they are hearing strange noises, you need to take them to the doctor immediately. Many children are not diagnosed with hearing impairments because the defect is not diagnosed due to lack of discomfort complaints.

Should the child often display inattentiveness when called, be noticeably slow to talk or speak with poor articulation, the parents ought to make arrangements for a specialist to test his hearing. Crankiness and tiredness are sometimes linked to a hearing impairment in adults as well as children.

Typically, a medical evaluation is performed before children enter the school system. The doctor will be able to determine the strength or weakness of a patient's hearing. If the parent is worried, definitely discuss your child's complaints with the doctor.

There are times when hearing impairment causes children to perform poorly at school, and this sometimes leads to a misconception that they are not intelligent. Some students even begin to skip school. He is always in the bottom ranking of the class. Tracing the student's actions back to his or her hearing impairment may not occur to the student's parents or teachers. All parents expect their children to excel in school. Hearing difficulties can seriously hurt your child's ability to learn. Early intervention gives your child more opportunity to overcome the difficulties of hearing loss, so don't wait to consult your child's doctor if you have any suspicions. Ensuring the best possible care for your ears is essential, as your ears are very valuable to you!
