Is Your Child Colicky?

By: Norman Kirby

Here are Some New Baby Care Tips

New baby care can absolutely be more challenging when you have a baby who experiences colic. A colicky baby is a baby who cries, often at a specific time of day, and then stops through your effort or because of nothing at all. No one truly knows what makes a colicky baby. The good thing about it is it does not last forever. Sooner or later, a baby always outgrows being colicky.

Anyway, while in the period of dealing with a colicky infant, there are some practical tips that you can follow to lessen the difficulty of the scenario. Below is the list:

Attend to your child ASAP you should pacify your colicky baby ASAP. The sooner you come to your child, the sooner the episode would likely stop. Do not give-in to the thought that he or she is not going to stop soon anyway.

Check if your child is wet or hungry- just because your baby is colicky does not mean you will no longer check whether he or she is crying because of something valid. Make sure that he or she is neither wet nor hungry. If he or she is either, then attend to the need.

Rock your baby rocking can effectively soothe the baby. Just make sure to not rock too hard. While doing this, put the baby s head close to your chest so your heartbeat can add some soothing effect.

Play some soft music- sometimes, a colicky baby just likes to hear something. Play some soft music in the background and see how he or she would react. A soft sound can relax him or her especially when he or she is in your arms. You should also take this chance to talk to your baby. Let him or her know that you are there and that you are not leaving.

Massage - perhaps you already know that massage is a popular technique when it comes to new baby care. Actually, it is especially helpful when it comes to handling a colic child. The skin contact soothes the baby as well as the strokes and pressures on his or her body. When the colic attack starts, you can make your child lie on his or her belly and place him or her on your lap. Then, simply rub your baby s back. Aside from receiving a touch therapy, your baby can also get rid of some air in his or her tummy that may be causing some discomfort.

Use some motion although some babies like to be still when being calmed down, some like it better when there are motions. If your baby s not responding to your sitting or standing still, or when he or she is not satisfied with your rocking, try swinging instead. You may also want to try a vibrating bouncer. Although not a must in new baby care, its vibration and rhythm may relax your colicky baby.
