Lip Reading Classes to Remedy Presbycusis

By: JaniceP Estey

A medical condition left this female executive deaf in one ear, causing her to hear mumbles from time to time. But only when it seemed that nearly everyone was muttering including those outside work did she decide to seek help. She eventually enrolled in the mouth lip reading program of the Central Institute for the Deaf, becoming one of the first to do so. For those who are living active lives and are dealing with age related hearing impairments, this program would definitely meet their needs.

As you get older, you lose your ability to make out the words that others are saying, says an audiologist helping out with the lip reading program. This program provided the lady with a form of preventive maintenance. Being able to communicate through spoken language is important in most careers. To provide more one on one attention, each one hour class for the week in a span of four weeks will have a maximum of four students.

To help develop lip reading skills, participants watch videos for about half of the class time. Figuring out sentences mouthed by the expressionless woman in the video is what they must try to do. Oftentimes, they imitate the woman's mouth as she gives the words. Students who can't figure out the sentence can request for a clue from the computer or ask it to rephrase the sentence. These are effective strategies in lip reading.

When sounds aren't processed correctly by the inner ear, it indicates the start of age related hearing loss or presbycusis. High pitched sounds are usually the first that people lose. Mumbling people onscreen is the first thing they'll complain of when they watch TV. She states that the condition presbycusis cannot be remedied much with the use of a hearing aid.

It becomes especially trouble in situations where there is a lot of background noise, such as at parties or at the movies. They start becoming depressed loners since they feel that they can't compete against those younger than them.

We are surrounded by more and more noise each day. Even young ones are not spared from hearing loss because of the constant amount of noise surround us. Now the country's number one disability, hearing impairment is currently a problem for around 28 million Americans. Around one in four adults will be hearing impaired permanently by the time he reaches 66.

A life of fulfillment and happiness is what the institute wants for those who enroll in the word of mouth program. Feelings of being young and sharp are experienced by those who trained in focused communication. Participants in the program, which started in 1998, are encouraged to practice lip reading with friends, family and coworkers. There are those who even turn on the mute in the TV.

Lip reading cannot be accomplished perfectly in just four weeks of training. They will come to the realization that it is difficult to lip read, and so they must find additional ways to help them with their hearing loss. Strategies for improved hearing are taught during the second half of the class.

Making a reservation in the front row for a seminar is an example. Why the reservation was made will be unknown. Weekend sessions and more accomodations are in the list of hopes of these institutes.
