Make sure your first ski holidays are a success.

By: Tom Jui

If you are about to book your ski holidays and this is the first time you will take to the slopes, you may be wondering what to take with you to make sure your ski holidays run smoothly. As for the actual equipment you will need - skis, poles, boots and safety gear - these can all be rented at just about any ski resort, so you won‘t have to spend a lot of money buying these items. If the holiday is a success and you find that you have really enjoyed your time spent in the catered chalets, you may want to invest in your own equipment, but for the moment hiring is probably the best option.

Having said that, you are better off if you buy your own goggles and helmet, as it is rare for these to be rented out during ski holidays.

As a beginner, once you have arrived in your catered chalets and unpacked everything, you will need to book a lesson. Of course, you could always just go out on the slopes and find your own way, but you are much more likely to pick up the technique if a professional is guiding you. This lesson will cover the basics and get you started with the simplest techniques you will need to stay upright as well as taking safety and the correct etiquette for the slopes into account.

But before you get there, you will have to make sure you pack everything you need. It’s recommended that you dress in layers while you are out on the slopes as this will ensure that you keep warm while you are standing around. Start with thermal underwear and a long-sleeved undershirt, preferably made of a material which wicks away your sweat. Follow this with a lightweight wool or fleece sweater, and top it off with a waterproof, insulated jacket and ski pants.
