Parenting and You

By: Mike Davis

Whether you are about to have a newborn baby or you are adopting, you must certainly think about how good a job of parenting you can do. You and your partner can firstly practice certain parenting skills by doing what you are supposed to do with a newborn baby: take care of it. prioritizing your baby's needs first will give you an idea of how a parent should be. It is putting your baby's needs before your own. For one, being interested is a great foundation. Involvement is one thing that you can practice during these early months, that aside from observing your baby's growth week by week, you are also putting into practice how you should keep an active role in their lives as they grow up.
If you are a new mother, you might start feeling the reality of your new role the moment you saw that positive sign on the home pregnancy test. For your husband, however, it may take him some time to adjust and realize the weight of suddenly being a father. You should know by now that you would need all the help you can get, especially if you are recovering from childbirth, so it is vital that you negotiate a working schedule between you and your partner. Even if he has work during the day, make it a point to at least get him to help with something on a regular basis. Give him the weekend if he is too tired during the weekdays. Or let him do the dishes whenever he is at home. Let him change the diapers or burp the baby. Getting the dad to interact with the baby will help build a strong father and child connection. Soon enough, dads who see their babies more of little people they can actually have fun with instead of tasks they are supposed to deal with, will surely develop parenting habits that will be vital to their children's future. Try not to dote on your husband when he carries the baby. Letting him take care of the baby without your supervision will definitely give him confidence and more bonding time with the baby.
Parenting per se can be easiest during these early stages, because all you have to do is to focus on your baby. The role is pretty much well-defined. You can make all the eye-contact, the baby talk, the indulging, the cuddles and kisses to your heart's content during this stage, simply because the babies need it. Though they communicate through crying, they are but asking for your attention -you brought them into this world, after all. This sweet stage also equates to dreadful nights, loads of clutter around the house, poops and puke on your blouse, it will be a rewarding experience when they smile at you or call you 'mama' or 'dada'. The hardships during this period will be nothing in comparison to when your baby would rather prefer to stay out with friends and being embarrassed of your kisses on public. So cherish your baby while you can and consider the sleepless nights ahead as an expression of love.
