Planning Your Wedding: Custom Wedding Cakes

By: Norman Kirby

Nearly every young woman has always dreamed of the perfect wedding. From the flowers and the dresses and, most definitely, the cakes, everything in the young woman and future bride's mind with regard to her wedding are utterly perfect.
Custom wedding cakes can be ordered from your favorite cake shop or through an excellent recommendation from one of your wedded friends. There are a lot of of clever chefs and bakers who can come up with great designs for your wedding cake, but be sure to be specific with your own ideas, motif and creative use of details so that you would not have to be anxious about it when you're near the date. Since the wedding cake is most likely the first thing that your guests will spot upon entering the wedding reception, it is always best to know that the cake will be impeccable with regard to both the look and the taste. Make sure to book your chef or baker as early as six months before the wedding to give him or her plenty of time for the cake design, the ingredients, the embellishments, and everything else that needs to be settled beforehand. Keep in mind that with custom wedding cakes, the budget might be over the average especially if you want it to be very unique. You have to make sure as to who will be designing the cake, who will be decorating it, and when they will start making it. With custom wedding cakes, it is fun and very open for all sorts of ideas but it is best to keep in mind some classy tips to keep custom wedding cakes from becoming a disaster:
Be careful with the decoration. A customized cake with plenty of details can be interesting or it can be too busy. Decorations such as flowers and ribbons should be used in moderation especially when you will be using big ones.
Be careful with the color of your cake. Try to stay away from plenty of black, violet, or dark green on your cake. Fondant has a larger color spectrum compared to buttercream, although the latter can be colored to a very wide variety of shades as well.
Top your cake with something unique . The classic bride and groom figurine has worked well for probably a hundred years but if you want your cake to stand out, try to be unique and stay away from the predictable wedding cake topper. One unique way is to use two decorated pieces of fruit such as pears or apples that are decorated into bride and groom ensemble and let them represent the bride and groom at the top of the cake.
Think outside of the box. Instead of the classic floral cake that has the flowers placed delicately around the cake, you can try topping the cake with an overflowing set of huge flowers and leave the rest of the cake simple and elegant.
