Reciprocal Mentoring: When Network Marketers Collaborate Through Mutual Mentoring.

By: Justine Simard

Mentors in online business and network marketing have various levels of expertise, various personalities, management approach and mentoring styles. In an industry that changes and expands more than most - through new technology, cutting-edge marketing techniques and tools, and huge turnover in both active business builders and income opportunities - it's not surprising that mentors are ‘born’ every day and enroll new people to help them in building an online business, as well as in growing through personal development and entrepreneurship.

The function of a network marketing mentor is indeed multifaceted. Personal development has truly been established as a vital component for becoming an online network marketer and building a profitable business. Moreover, mentors are introduced to new income opportunities and tools every day, and prior to sharing their advice must make a decision about whether or not these are just another useless fad, or rather a revolutionary tactic that may secure more growth and stronger business practices.

Now, let's be realistic: can we expect all mentors to know all about most cutting-edge and most reliable business strategies within the industry, whilst being an expert in personal development? Those of you who read me regularly will know that I don't believe in realism all that much, but seriously, in an industry that evolves so fast and thrives on new entrepreneurs becoming mentors and leaders almost instantly, we can't command this degree of expertise and experience.

The usual idea of mentoring is determined around a one-way relationship, from the expert to the apprentice. What I have noticed in network marketing on the other hand, is rather different. First of all, mentors abound, in all areas of online business growth, online marketing, leadership, and personal development. Second, their business and leadership approaches vary greatly. Third, collaboration in key in our industry, through servant leadership but also intrinsically in the value we place in leveraging and duplicating our business success. Fourth, as online entrepreneurs, we value networking and masterminding with like-minded people, and have the liberty to pick who we associate with. Together, these points fully substanciate the thought of reciprocal mentoring.

So what do I call mutual mentoring? Mentoring is about sharing inspiration and expertise, whilst providing genuine support for personal development in one’s individual passions and strengths. By way of building my networks and participating in masterminding sessions with various people who share the same values and goals, I've found myself in both the mentor and mentoree role. I have provided training, advice, inspiration, guidance and support to individuals who, in return, have given me the same in other areas. In that sense, mutual mentoring is creating a relationship where two people can mentor one another, through their individual strengths, expertise and inspiration.

The idea of mutual mentoring has some interesting implications for new online entrepreneurs and network marketers. It means that they are able to use their strengths from the start in mentoring others. It implies that they have the power to impact on their own mentors. It implies that they are able to engage in their networks knowing that they can participate and present value, whether it is through partnerships, informal masterminding or team training. It also implies that they can be empowered leaders, while at the same time being mentored themselves by the like-minded people who have the right values and expertise. And to the truly experienced mentors and business veterans, it means that they are able to obtain some value back when they mentor others, in particular when they build relationships with those that have a similar level of experience, but in other areas for their online business or personal development.

With mutual mentoring, the exchange between two people needn't be one of knowledge one way, and money the other way. The exchange can be of real value, knowledge and inspiration, reciprocally between two individuals who share similar values and goals, but have different strengths and expertise to contribute.

What is your experience with reciprocal mentoring? Do you have faith in its value for network maketers? Please don’t forget to write a comment, and if you see value in this post, share it with your online business networks!
