By: Manyui Lotsfd

Over 14 million persons residing in America possesses some degree of hearing loss that gets in the way of their interpersonal relations. From September 21 to 28, Deaf Awareness Week shall be observed and the East Harris County coop for the deaf's very own counselor will lend a hand in helping it achieve triumph. In the schools of this area, a counselor spends time with hearing impaired youth. Proving to be one astounding lady, she has a master's degree that is special education certified in counseling and before that, a bachelor of science degree in teaching hearing impaired and children that could hear as well.

She states that the educational concerns of the youth aged 0 to 21 with auditory problems are the prime reasons why the coop was established. Handled by another woman supervisor, the members of the coop staff include speech pathologists, advisors and counselors, reading specialists, diagnosticians and interpreters. She recounts that they work hand in hand like a team.

But she adds that the other teachers from different schools are also valuable. These are experts when it comes to deaf children and they also know how to use the aides that will ease the process of learning for the kids. Most hearing students though they differ when it comes to the degree of deafness, should be able to utilize the program for their advantage as it can do so much for them. She abides by the ultimate philosophy of communication which covers everything starting from speech, speech reading, auditory training, simply reading, composition, sign language, finger spelling, gestures, guess work, and body language, depending on the deaf child's needs.

What makes this program special is that it really involves the families of these hearing impaired kids. The parents must always prioritize communicating effectively with the children while understanding what hearing impairment is all about. It is good to note that this program includes sign language lessons for parents as well as language lessons for the home. The center envisioned Deaf Awareness Week to bring out the confidence of the deaf children.

It's not really a handicap if they don't want it to be. Look at them first as young humans and consider their deafness as a miniscule component in their being. I intend to make a difference in that sea of challenges, she shares.

On her agenda is also a discussion on the contraptions today made for the deaf. Hearing contraptions like hearing aids and similar items as well as caring for these will be the gist of their discussion. Communicating through sign language is a way to make the deaf hear.

Many people see how amazing sign language is. She said, I remind the kids that if they can still express themselves effectively even as they chew and eat away, then they are at an advantage. In order to encourage better communication skills among the deaf, flashing lights for TV sets and fire alarms as well as closed caption TV sets are suggested.

In conjunction with Deaf Awareness Week, the local municipal Library will feature special bulletin boards and special books available all week. At the library, Deaf Awareness Week is something valued as one of their employees is deaf. She was left without hearing after being diagnosed with spinal meningitis.

When she was back in Washington, she shares that she got spinal meningitis and this was what made her lose her hearing ability completely. My ability to hear vanished suddenly after I was able to hear well for 30 years. The thought of being unable to hear scared me and I did not know how I would manage, she said.
