Smart Tips on Improving your Cake and Pastry's Quality for Birthdays

By: Norman Kirby

For birthday parties, your loved ones will deeply appreciate cakes and pastries as presents. They make good desserts, making parties more enjoyable and memorable. Ready-made pastries from bakeshops will be well-appreciated, but you can make it extra special by making the dessert by yourself. You can make your cake and pastry's taste and design more appealing by following these tips:
Plan and prepare tools and ingredients early.
This is a crucial step, especially for novices in baking. Spend your time reading internet articles and books for tips and instructions. They will give you plenty of ideas on how to create a baked masterpiece. Also, know the favorite flavors of the birthday celebrant. Gather prospective recipes and test them out before the event. This will improve your confidence and help avoid mistakes when you finally bake the birthday present. Do the cake or pastries not on the night before the party, unless you are already skilled in making them. Some cakes need cooling and chilling before they can be sliced well.
Explore different flavors, but don't overdo it.
The filling does not need to have the same taste as the frosting. Explore different ingredients to come up with an interesting recipe. Perhaps you can try a strawberry-chocolate mixture. The frosting can be made with chocolate while, in between the cake's layers, the filling can be made with strawberry jam. You can give a hint of sourness and texture by adding shreds of strawberry in the filling. As for pastries, you can add a distinct texture and aroma by using ground corn flakes.
However, it is important not to overdo flavoring and adding of filling. Remember that the body of the cake should be light, making it pleasant to chew and swallow. Generally, the texture and density of cakes are lighter than regular pastry's. Too much moisture and sugar may overwhelm the one eating it. Also, use an ample amount of frosting. This is not just for flavoring or sweetening the cake. The frosting will also serve as base for attaching designs, icing and other toppers.
Be creative with the pastry's design and toppers.
Decorating pastries is fun. You must consider the likes, hobbies and personality of the birthday celebrant. For example, you can focus on his/her profession. If the celebrant is a teacher, why not make a cake that looks like a pile of books, or a person resembling a teacher. You can change the color of the cake's dough by adding food-coloring to the mixture. Several edible products can be used as toppings . For example, you can sculpt figures from white chocolate. If the theme of the birthday party is for adults, you can spice up the event by designing adult-themed or "sexually-oriented" pastries. You can easily shape the cake body and the icing with molds, which are available from kitchenware shops.
Add a message.
The message is usually written on the cake or the pastry's top surface. Just remember to keep the colors coordinated. Use syrup with a high-contrast color with the base to make it stand out. As for pies, you can use the recipe for the crust to make letters and shapes on the top.
