Both Tanzania and Kenya have good reasons for choosing them over the other for a safari. It really comes down to your personal preferences and what you want to see on safari. One of the biggest differences is that Kenya is a much more common or popular destination for a safari compared to Tanzania. However, that does not mean that Tanzania has nothing to offer, as the offerings are often quite similar. One thing to consider when choosing between Kenya and Tanzania for a safari is the big game you can see. In both countries you can spot lions and elephants at about the same odds. In the case of giraffes, Kenya has an edge over Tanzania because in Kenya there are Masai, reticulated, and Rothschild giraffes, while there are only Masai in Tanzania. For the most part the only difference between the species is minor color variations. The spots are also a little bit differently shaped depending on the species. Seeing the wildebeast and the Great Wildebeast migration is another thing to consider when choosing between a safari in Tanzania or Kenya. Both countries allow you to view the migration. Tanzania is recommended for those that want to see the young wildebeests, as that is where they are typically born. Kenya is a good choice if you want to see the wildebeast crossing rivers. There are a few things that make Tanzania more unique for a safari. For one, if you want to see chimpanzees, then Tanzania is the choice for you. Another benefit of Tanzania over Kenya for a safari is that one of the parks for going on safari (Saadani National Park) is along the coast and offers a beach and safari combined experience. The main highlight of this is seeing elephants play in the water, although there have been instances of this being seen in Kenya, as well. Overall there really is not that much of a difference between a safari in Tanzania and Kenya. To some extent going to Tanzania might seem more off the beaten path, although both countries’ infrastructure is pretty similar. Tanzania’s main benefit is that it has more chimpanzees and monkey species than Kenya. However, other than that Kenya has pretty much the same to offer while also having more of a variety in giraffe species. Kenya also has more flamingos, although flamingos are still very plentiful in Tanzania.
