Tanzania has been a popular destination for African safaris for a long time. More recently Uganda has worked on promoting tourism to their country and had become more increasingly considered as an African travel destination. It might not be the same to just visit Uganda, as Tanzania does have the big draw of the Serengeti National Park, which is hard to compete with safari wise. However, Uganda is still more off the beaten path destination and that in itself can be a draw for some tourists. One reason you might want to visit Uganda as an add on to a Tanzania vacation is if you want to see mountain gorillas. Tanzania is known for the chimpanzees, as this is where the Jane Goodall program operates. However, there are no mountain gorillas in Tanzania. Uganda is not the only place that has them, as Rwanda and the Congo also have them, but Uganda is the most convenient of the three to visit if you are already traveling to Tanzania. There are some other activities that Uganda has begun to develop to draw in tourism that might also make you want to visit as part of your Tanzania trip. This includes water activities such as rafting on the Nile River and kayaking. There are also opportunities for bungee jumping and mountain climbing. Some of the things you can do in Uganda are not much different than the tourism options available when you visit Tanzania, however they might be a little bit more authentic at this point due to it still an emerging tourist destination in the region. These activities include various types of safaris. Some of the different types of safaris you can take in Uganda include birding safaris, game drives, and cultural safaris. Of those three the cultural safaris are likely the most different from Tanzania, as the cultures vary from country to country and region to region. There are a few natural landmarks to see in Uganda that make it worth visiting if you are interested in that sort of thing. For example, the Murchison Falls is located in Uganda on the Victoria Nile. This is a nice waterfall, although not as spectacular as other waterfalls, such as Victoria Falls, that can be seen in other parts of Africa. Lake Victoria can also be enjoyed in Uganda, but part of it is also in Tanzania, so you do not really need to visit Uganda to visit the lake.
