The Art of Persuasion

By: Jose Anajero

Have you ever attended a church and listened to a unexciting preaching?

When I was young I indeed got my fill of deadly ramblings from the stand. I've also witness my share of disappointingly prepared sales letters on the internet.

I'm an internet marketing entrepreneur. Conducting business on the internet requires some copywriting expertise. As you may know, I'm also serving as a missionary in southern Mexico. After I chose to become a "preacher" I became firm not to present uninteresting sermons.

Some of the things that I am learning in my internet business are overflowing into my apostolate. Specially when it pertains to presenting homilies.

I took some homiletic subjects in Bible College. What I'm about to share is a little distinct. It's not homiletics and it's not even copywriting .

Think of it as a persuasion. When we think of online business we think of writing excellent copy. As copywriters we learn the art of persuasion to a extremely high level.

As preachers we must be incredibly skillful in the art of persuasion. Those skills can be translated to audio and video as well.

And it would be the audio and video versions that would be appropriate more directly to a homily.

We commonly think of preaching when we hear an audible voice. We at times even think of it as outcry. Preaching may not be flawless and it can positively be frowned upon when it is negative, critical or judgmental. But it is the excellent tactic and even God's chosen way to present messages of hope, love and redemption to the masses.
In all the world's understanding, it still didn't know God…so he sent preachers!

Most copywriters are far from flawless. In fact, we'd wish to tell them to "get a new job".

What have I expressly learned about persuasion from my online business that has enabled me to be a better preacher?

The object of copywriting is to persuade our prospect to undertake a precise goal, to take action or perform a given action. This is especially true when it pertains to an online business. This has indeed helped me to give improved homilies as a preacher too.

We frequently think of copywriting as material that is perused. But, as I mentioned above, Persuasion methods can and should be in an audible and visual set-up. For that reason, we are seeing audio and video copywriting delivered more and more often on the internet.

Therefore we most positively can take our skills of persuasion and apply them to our message. I used to be "overly confrontational" and am now much more wise as a serpent of conveying the message to people. You do that by meeting people where they are…and proceeding from there.

I think Paul's presentation of the "Unknown God" is the brilliant representation in the scriptures of a "sales presentation" in evangelism because he met the crowd right where they were thinking…and then guided them in a logical/emotional format to God. -Acts 17:22-17:31

Even though he didn't change the city, the people said they liked to hear more.
