The Location and Appearance of the Typical Bed Bug

By: Dovid Davis

The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius Linnaeus) probably received its name from its close association with human bedding. Bed bugs often seek refuge in bedding during the day and feed on the bed's occupants at night. These domestic insect pests are called by several different names:wall louse, house bug, mahogany flat, red coat, and crimson ramblers, to list just a few.,

Bed bugs prefer feeding on humans, but their culinary adventures are not restricted to man. Various species of the bedbug insect family Cimicidae also feed on mammals, poultry and non-domestic foul. For example, among bedbugs reported in New Mexico are the western bat bug (Cimex pilosellus Horvath) and the swallow bug (Oeciacus vicarius Horvath). While these insects prefer other hosts, they can, when stressed,move indoors and feed on humans

It has never been proven that bed bugs are disease carriers in the United States. Bedbugs are spread mainly by clothing and baggage of travelers and visitors, secondhand beds, bedding materials, furniture, and laundry. Consequently, a conscientious homeowner should take the following stpes to keep his home bedbug free. He should carefully protect his luggage on a trip by using luggage racks and avoid placing baggage on the ground. Upon returning home, a traveller should immediately wash all his travel clothes in hot water. Homeowers should also be careful to inspect all second hand furniture for bed bugs before bringing any item into the house. |He should meticulously inspect any and all second furniture or other items that are brought into his home.}

Mature bed bugs are a brown- to mahogany-colored, wingless insect. Their size depends on how recently they have eaten a blood meal. An unfed bed bug is between 1/4 and 3/8 inches long. The upper surface of their body have a papery, crinkly, flimsy appearance. When engorged with blood, its body becomes elongated and swollen, and its color changes from brown to dull red. The color, size, and shape change from an unfed to a full bug is vrey noticeable.
