The Main Employing Mistakes in Physiotherapy Enterprises

By: Paul Wright

In the last 20 years I have interviewed hundreds of health practitioners, read lots of CVs and committed a lots of appalling (and happily some very good) hiring decisions for my health care business - Get Active Physiotherapy.

Here are three of the major and most common missteps that lots of Physiotherapy business owners commit when looking for new team members.

Mistake Number One - We Hire Based on Technical Skill

Now this is one of the most hot errors- and raises much discussion - particularly from the highly technical clinic owners and university types. However, I basically believe that we were all indoctrinated at our undergraduate courses to be so technically excellent that we abandoned any considerable research in the vital area of people skills and rapport building - only check at the number of Physiotherapists participating technical updates as opposed to those participating a "Developing people Skills" or an "NLP" program - assuming you can even stumble on these courses.

Employing Mistake Number Two - We Fritter away Time on Duds

Sorry for the unkind reality of this but we have to confront the fact that there are a huge number of job applicants that are just not fitting to our individual clinics - whether it is the overseas taught Physiotherapist without present license, to the new graduate with no individuals skills to the inactive therapist looking to operate in a sports clinic - numerous individuals do not have a excellent concept of fact and as a result we spend too much time on applicants that indeed are not appropriate at all.

I think your most central asset is your time as a health business owner and you ought treat it like gold.

Hiring Mistake Number Three - We Hire too Quickly

This is one of my specialities (and why I made so many mistakes early on in practice) - the recruiting process can be so long, drawn out ,costly and draining that often we just want to get the position filled and will take the first vaguely qualified health practitioner that comes along - even though they are on a 3 month visa, don't have a car to get to your clinic which is not close to public transport, has just got out of hospital for chronic fatigue, cant operate past 5pm and lives more than 90 minutes away.

In Physiotherapy business it is just a reality of life that you will at all times be recruiting - so just recognize this fact and do your best to cherish the process- it is straightforward to look back and laugh when you have finally filled a position with someone impressive - but then they leave (as their spouse has been transferred to Tanzania) and the smile seems to fade away from your face as the "employment shuffle" starts all over again.
