Threatened by Noise Pollution

By: Edna Hooper

Playing around nervously with a hearing aid was a popular ear doctor. If things don't change, he believes that hearing loss would be a problem for most big city people. Also a noted noise fighter in California, this gentleman and ear specialist is not alone. Environmentalists from Los Angeles to New York are pointing accusing fingers at everything from airplanes and jackhammers to air conditioners, motorcycles and trucks as potent sources of pervasive pollutant, noise.

Their fight seems to be doing well at the moment. Environmentalists say that stricter provisions could have been given by the anti noise bill. Being on of the noisiest cities in the United States, New York City just passed an anti noise ordinance that puts stricter measures on preventing noise pollution.

Noise continues to be there, though. Serious damage to one's physical and psychological is caused by the noise pollution of modern life. Eventually, 20percent of all Americans who are exposed to the noise of modern life are most likely to develop hearing loss, according to a report by the Environmental Pollution Agency.

Around 80 million Americans are negatively affected by noise, the report states. Millions of men and women who work in noisy industries are not included in this count. Noise effects include those suffered by a family living near a noisy factory and those experienced by kids near the Los Angeles International Airport.

Teachers near the airport have to use bullhorns to talk to students as the big jets roar overhead. Kids' irritation of the noise usually lead to more fights, state the school officials. Researchers report that the children are in danger of serious hearing loss as noise levels soar to 100,000 times that found in the average neighborhood. Noise in other indoor areas is not bad as the level of noise in these classrooms.

A loud noise causes faster heartbeat and contracted muscles in a fetus. People who are exposed to noise may become distressed, hyperactive, or just easily irritated. A person would most likely produce poorer work because of noise.

Although a person may produce the same output, he may not have been able to perform at his best. People exposed to noise may also get sore throats or may be deprived of sleep. People may fall asleep, but they wouldn't feel very rested and would even be irritable during the day.

Aging is not the reason why people develop hearing loss, but overexposure is, researchers say. The members of the tribe who are 75 years old and above can hear just as well as a young American adult.

Their middle aged tribesmen don't suffer the hearing loss experienced by those of the same age who were involved in gunshot battles. The hearing loss associated to these kinds of loud noises only becomes apparent when the men reach an older age.
