Watch out for the ear monster, Tinnitus

By: Diane Keller

There is a saying that silence is as precious as gold. It may be a saying for the elderly but it is a reality for those who suffer from a ringing in their ears known as tinnitus, who are now from ten to fifteen million nationwide. For this lady that hails in Tyrone, tinnitus is nothing new. She shares that what she calls a hissing sound conquered her two ears about 10 years ago and then that was when she started losing her hearing in her left ear sadly. Those awful hisses became painful squeals.

I could not sleep and I could not stop crying, she shares. She consulted so many local physicians within Hershey, all of whom told her she couldn't be lent a hand. Finally, after everything she tried she chanced upon the masker which is able to cover or mask the noise within the ear by resonating a sound. And even for any man's money, this woman won't do without it.

The unvarying ringing or roaring sound in the ears is known as the condition, tinnitus. Such becomes a lifelong burden for so many people. It is sad that tinnitus has many causes, and it's not always treatable, unfortunately. Both the patient and the doctor find this condition so bothersome, as per an audiology expert from Altoona. The same remedy won't work for all.

But it is disheartening how some problems cannot be solved. Others have a problem like wax build up in their ears while others need to respond to drug therapy.

Tinnitus would arise from any form of harm done to the cochlea of a person which can result from several factors from a loud noise or repeated excessive noise, decreased blood supply to the ear caused by poor movement. In very few cases, and the audiologist emphasizes a few, a tumor or other serious problem can cause the ringing. Healing tinnitus is harder for doctors as it is not always associated with hearing loss problems. One should know that there are certain hobbies that can put people at risk for ear damage, and ultimately bring tinnitus. She points to hunting as a culprit. The sharp crack of gunfire in a hunter's ear, she states, can damage nerve endings and cause a ringing in the ear for a short period.

Make sure ear protecting gadgets if your ears buzz as a result of loud noises. It is vital that an otolaryngologist or an audiologist checks the ears in order to rule out causes that can be fixed. Drug healing sometimes can help the tinnitus sufferer, but not generally. A very new treatment called Xanax was found to be successful.

Patients would be advised to use maskers that emit sound to mask the tinnitus by their health experts. This masker is in fact part of the hearing aid whose models resemble small radio things. These causes, once ruled out means that patients can't do anything else but must learn to live with such a condition. Physicians teach the victims how to ignore the ringing and lessen it from being a stressor. Relaxation methods and other modes of exercise works well in eliminating stress. As per the other experts, acupuncture or hypnosis could really help.
