Wedding photography is a very personal choice and you do need to sit down and think about what style of photographs you would like before you start looking for a professional photography service. There are generally three main types of wedding photographs; photojournalistic, traditional and artistic. These types all have their pros and cons and you will need to decide which options best suit your expectations from your photographs. Remember you could have a mixture all of three types of photographs if you want to create a variety of different images from your wedding. Once you have decided which types of photographs would best suit your wedding you need to make sure you find a wedding photographer that has right kind of skills and experience. This will help to ensure you get wedding photographs that you want as mementos of your special day.

Photojournalistic Wedding Photography

This type of photography has a very realistic and immediate feel and the wedding party and the guests will be captured very much ‘in the moment’. Instead of staged photographs the photographer will integrate themselves into the wedding and take spontaneous shots, very much like a photojournalist. This allows them to capture the real emotions and feelings of the day and creates a very personal, realistic photo album for your wedding. The guests will be captured in more natural poses and this can create some very unique and beautiful photographs. However you may also want to combine the photojournalist style with a few more traditional shots just to make sure you get all the photos of your family groups.

Traditional Wedding Photography

This is most common type of wedding photography and is a more formal style where the bridal party and the guests will be arranged into groups for photographs. Traditional wedding photography generally takes place just after the ceremony in the church or registry office grounds. This will provide you with a chance to get specific high quality family group shots. One of the downsides of traditional wedding photography is that the poses tend to be very formulaic and not very natural so you may want to combine this with some more spontaneous photojournalist style photographs as well.

Artistic Wedding Photography

Artistic wedding photography is becoming more popular these days. This allows the photographer to be more creative and take very original and unique photographs of your day. Often artistic photography will provide you with a wide range of different shots in sepia, colour and black and white and these tend to be artistic looking prints with unusual angles or unique poses. It is very important when you are choosing more creative photographs that you research the artistic style of your photographer and ensure that it meets with your own tastes.
