What You Should Know About the Effectiveness of Birth Control

By: Jimny Mccoy

Generally, all birth control pills, injections and methods are effective. That's the reason why these are out in the market in the first place. The trouble is each contraceptive has different level of effectiveness. Hence, as a responsible adult, you must get to know which birth control method is best for you and your family.

There are four different methods that you can choose from: natural, over the counter, prescription and permanent. The effectiveness of Birth Control methods mainly depends on factors like usage and a person's response to the method.

The following are the four contraceptive methods:

The Natural Method- Abstinence, cervical mucus test, basal body temperature, and withdrawal are the few things included in the natural method. The most effective among these is Abstinence. Of course, no physical contact means no pregnancy. The rest are only 20-35% effective. For this method to be reliable, you must be very knowledgeable about the female reproductive system. However, a great number of people are unaware of this science and if you're one of them, stay away from the methods under this group.

Over-the-Counter- Condoms, spermicides, and sponges can be purchased in drug stores and pharmacies. You don't need a prescription for this type of contraception. They are a synthetic or an (some) organic barrier that keeps the sperm from meeting the egg. If they are properly used, they are about 68%-98% effective in preventing pregnancy.

Prescription from a Doctor or Health Care Provider - pills, injections, patches, diaphragms, IUD and cervical caps are things prescribed by the doctor in preventing pregnancy. IUD, diaphragms, and cervical caps are inserted within the female organ by a health care provider. The effectiveness of these contraceptives is from 68% - 99.7%. However, some of the substances used in this method can cause irritation and infection so have your doctor check on you from time to time.

Permanent Method- Ligation is common among women who choose not to have anymore babies. Vasectomy on the other hand is not very common among men. Both methods are permanent and both are surgically done in the hospital by a surgeon. Vasectomy is 100% effective but ligation is only 99%. Ligation can still cause pregnancy, most especially ectopic pregnancy.

The choices you make when it comes to birth control should depend on what's best for your body. What you should remember is that the Effectiveness of Birth Control is based on your knowledge and how you implement the method you've chosen. So before you pick an option, be sure you consult your doctor about your plans.
