According to recent research by the Association of Convenience Stores, there are in excess of 12,000 small independent shops that were forced to close their doors for business in 2009. Many people see this as a highly contentious issue, both within the retail trade itself and amongst shoppers in city centres, towns and suburbs.

On a business level, it reflects a case of large multinational and global organisations flexing their competitive muscles over small retailers who cannot survive and prosper against their bulk buying power, convenience and competitive pricing structures. However, at a local level, shoppers and local Government seem to be in agreement that High Street domination by well known mass markets brands results in an area being stripped of its character and marks a vertiginous drop towards bland and generic shopping areas that are lacking in individuality and quirkiness.
