Where Are You Now? In Hell Or in Heaven?

By: marivicmalinao

Were you faced with this most befuddling question whether or not there are places called 'heaven' and 'hell'? This concept is as clear as mud to people. According to Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda, a prolific writer, "if you act according to moral principles, you can create your own heaven right here on earth. But when you violate them, you can feel the hell-fire on this earth itself."

We can all enjoy cloud nine in this world if we are at peace with ourselves. It is heaven to live a peaceful and respectable life, free from selfish desires and worldly pleasures. To achieve greatest happiness, we must be satisfied with little. Where one wishes for nothing is the greatest of all bliss. The fewer the necessities, the greater the happiness. Happiness cannot be equated with wealth.

Money is just a means to an end. Nonetheless, men is so caught up with accumulating wealth that they have lost the influence and meaning of honesty and morality. Everyday people commit crimes, fraud, swindling and other heinous crimes that bring sufferings and even death not only to the perpetrators but to the poor victims as well. The need for more and more money will lead to problems, frustrations, difficulties and sufferings. As is happening now, to some, accumulation of wealth is the sole purpose of their lives, thus creating their own hell. Unhappy and troubled life is hell. People forget that there are more important and meaningful things in life than becoming rich. Those who know that enough is enough will always have enough.

There is no need to create heaven or hell to reward virtue and punish vice or inequities. Heaven and hell are the inevitable reactions to what we are doing. Man has the potential to do good or evil. To be a slave of worldly pleasures may lead to accumulation of wealth through unjust means and misappropriation, the source of pain and sorrow, the route to perdition. The great battle between good and evil is within us. It has to be fought with our consciousness of all the negative and positive forces within our minds. Such awareness will open the door to bring forth wholesome thoughts from dispute and discord.

Heaven and hell are what we make of our lives. They exist in any part of the universe where there are living beings. Separately? No, there are no separate places. A person may experience hell for a moment and later heaven depending upon how he fought the battle within himself. At this moment, I am in heaven at peace with my comfortable set of bedding and free from other anxieties and desires. How about you, are you in hell or in heaven?
