Would a Joomla CMS be the best choice for developing your website?

By: Danny Ellise

Many website owners turn to a CMS developer when deciding to build their sites. Few people use static HTML files nowadays because content management systems are so flexible. Those that do are typically professionals well versed in server technologies, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, although there are a small number of amateurs creating basic web sites with editors like Expression Web, Dreamweaver and the open source Komposer.

Content management systems used to be available to a select few, but since the introduction of open source CMS the number available has become enormous. One of the most popular to emerge in recent years has been Joomla; it is the first choice of many professional developers, and can be used just as easily by the amateur Webmaster to create a good-looking and fully functional website. Of course Joomla is not the only CMS on the market; both Drupal and CMS Made Simple have devoted followers convinced that their system is best. Although WordPress is generally regarded as a blogging platform, it is very widely used as a content management system due to its user-friendliness, range of extensions and good reputation.

Whether you decide to use a CMS like Joomla must depend upon your own individual requirements and the purpose to which you will put the site when it is live. Popular CMS have not only huge support communities, but a seemingly endless array of plug-ins and components which extend the functionality enormously. An obvious example of this would be the shopping cart. Much of this support is free, as are the plug-ins. Web developers could have charged thousands of dollars for this service are few years ago, but now it is available to anyone.

Obviously there are important considerations when developing an e-commerce site. There are many complexities, some of them extremely important like tax bands and shipping charges which would put the task out of the reach of most people, but there are those who are prepared to rise to the challenge and who complete perfectly usable and fully functional e-commerce sites without any prior knowledge or experience.

If you do decide to use Joomla to develop your website you will find the community extremely helpful and the range of extensions and free templates utterly amazing. Having your own website or blog can be a satisfying experience; using Joomla to develop it makes the process even more satisfying.
